If you find yourself in Toyako Onsen, the town on the southwest shore of Lake Toya, don't miss this outstanding soba restaurant:The shop is one street back (away from the lake) from the main lakeside road, on a southwest corner. No English menu, no English sign. The soba flour is ground from buckwheat grown in Horokanai, a Hokkaido town famous for buckwheat. The noodles are handmade on the premises.I had the tempura soba (880 yen). You can have it hot or cold. The noodles were wonderfully firm and the tempura was light and crispy. My friend had the oyako soba (chicken and egg soba) for the same price. Both dishes are served with a mini rice ball consisting of crisp nori seaweed wrapped around a mix of white and red rice. If you love soba and are in Lake Toya, do not miss this place.

It seems that they are a couple, but they are working together and my wife's customer service has a pleasant light. I did not ask, but maybe tempura was good. I asked for Tanuki, but it was a bit lonely. Heavenspan was crispy and delicious.

It was my first soba noodle in Japan. It was really delicious, but the amount was not enough for me.
